Helping to cope with illness

Convinced of the physical and psychological benefits of an aesthetic approach tailored to individual patients, the L'Oréal Foundation promotes the integration of beauty care and well-being treatments in medical settings. It collaborates closely with experts in their fields, such as Gustave Roussy for the treatment of cancer, and Montsouris Institute, the Maison de Solenn and the Poitiers UniversityHospital for the treatment of anorexia. These targeted care programs are also a chance for women to share and exchange ideas and advice on how to overcome physical difficulties that can result from cancer treatments, including disfiguration of the nails, alopecia, rashes and dry skin. The intervention of trained professionals also allows patients to learn how to take care of themselves again, and it helps patients strengthen their ties with the medical team: the person, rather than the “patient”, is taken into account.

Overcoming exclusion

The L'Oréal Foundation also promotes its care approach in social organizations. It supports organizations like Joséphine pour la beauté des femmes and Emmaüs Solidarité de la rue à la vie, which provides assistance to women in dangerous situations.

Thanks to the care performed by volunteer professionals, Joséphine, created in 2006 by Lucia Iraci, supports women, helping them with job searches and, more generally, in social reintegration. Over the last two years, 20 % of women who have been reached by the association have gone on to find jobs.

Putting smiles back on faces

In certain extreme cases where all or part of the face must be literally rebuilt, the L'Oréal Foundation, in partnership with Médecins du Monde, works through Opération Sourire (“Operation Smile”) to support reconstructive surgery interventions in over 10 countries. These operations help victims of war injuries, illness, malnutrition and inherited conditions to avoid many forms of social exclusion. Local staff is trained in surgical techniques. Since the beginning of Opération Sourire in 1989, more than 1,000 children a year have received operations that help them to lead a normal life.

High-quality, tuition-free training

The L’Oréal Foundation provides free expert training to adults and young people aged fifteen and over, drawing on areas of expertise for which the L’Oréal group is famous, such as hair care and makeup.

Among those who benefit from the program are women in vulnerable social or economic situations, young people experiencing family problems or difficulties at school, or are victims of conflict and violence.

Countries where just being born a woman can be a real handicap and girls remain excluded from school facilities are also targets for the training program. With little education, these girls have many difficulties in finding a job and in building their future.

Program objectives: to give these groups the motivation, self-respect and the means for their professional reintegration through quality education provided by professionals, sustainable support tailored to each student, and a diploma developed in collaboration with local authorities.

An international dimension

The Beauty For a Better Life training program is the result of a strong partnership in more than 20 countries between the L'Oréal Foundation, the group's subsidiaries, local stakeholders such as NGOs, and government authorities.

In France, the L'Oréal Foundation works closely with the Apprentis d’Auteuil Foundation. Internationally, China, Indonesia, Lebanon, Vietnam, Cambodia, Colombia and even Argentina are among the twenty founding countries where the program has been developed.
