There may be a lot of changes to get used to as you get older, but there's no need to let go of an effective and suitable beauty regime.

From skipping lip liner, to going too heavy on the concealer, there's plenty of common beauty errors that can leave you looking old beyond your years.

FEMAIL looks at the common makeup mistakes that can leave women looking more mature.

WEARING BLACK EYE MAKEUP

Dark eye liner and shadow may have been great in the past for achieving a party-ready, smoky look, but in older age, the key is definitely to lighten up.

Dark lines can look severe on aged skin, making eyes look smaller or even drawing attention to crow's feet.

Opt for a soft smoky chocolate tone in mascara and liner, which will give sultry definition to the eyes without overpowering the face.

WEARING HEAVY MAKEUP ON LOWER LASHES

It's not uncommon to be keeping the same beauty regime from your early twenties, but heavy dark mascara or eye liner on the bottom water line or lower lashes can add years onto your face, by drawing attention to dark shadows and fine lines.

Switch it up by keeping the eye area understated, instead opting for a few coats on the top lashes, and making eyes look fresher and more doe-like.

If lipstick is a makeup favourite in your later years, ensure to line the lips before applying any colour.

As you mature, thin lines can develop around the mouth, which is emphasised by any bleeding lipstick.

Liner will lock in the colour all throughout the day, ensuring a perfectly precise pout.

GOING TOO HEAVY WITH CONCEALER

Unfortunately, as you near the years when you particularly need a concealer, it can let you down by settling into any fine lines, accentuating the ageing process.

To keep it from drawing attention in a negative way, only use in the inner halves of the under-eye area, and also opt for liquid, highlighting varieties, which are more likely to moisturise and smooth lines over.

WEARING COLOURFUL OR GLITTERY EYE SHADOW

Although it may seem like a good idea to experiment with colour and frosty shades in later life, this can in fact add years on - drawing attention to saggy eyelids and dark under-eye bags.

Opt for tasteful matte shades that give the eye subtle definition without appearing too overpowering.

WEARING THE WRONG POWDER

Powder can save a shiny complexion, but as you get older, denser varieties can end up settling into wrinkles and enlarged pores.

Opt for a HD pressed powder, which prides itself in having a translucent appearance and sheer finish, which will leave the skin with a youthful, soft-focus appearance.

A good primer is effective in turning the skin into a flawless canvas on which to apply foundation.

Opt for a silicone-based primer, which is brilliant at smoothing enlarged pores as well as fine lines, allowing the foundation to settle on top of it perfectly.

DYEING HAIR ALL ONE COLOUR

While experimenting with different hair shades may have been flattering in your younger years, the intense one-shade look can be overly severe on older women.

Opt for a multi-tonal hair dye that will add dimensions and give the appearance of layers, for an overall more youthful look.

Take note from stars such as supermodel Cara Delevingne, who prove that thick and healthy brows can transform the face, and even take years off in later years.

If a pencil is making the brows a little too severe, opt for a waxy palette with a small angle-tip brush.

Define the arch and subtly shade in any sparse areas for a youthful, full look.

EXPERT TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR FACE LOOK YOUNGER

Celebrity make-up artist and DFMA Academy founder Davinia Fermi’s reveals tricks to make your face look more youthful.

1. Avoid shimmer eyeshadow

It highlights wrinkles and magnifies them, instead opt for an eye primer which smooths out fine lines before eyeshadow application. Also try and use matte shades with a hint of pink undertones this adds youth and a glow.

2. Natural-looking foundation

Foundation with too much coverage makes the skin look older. Try and go with a foundation that has a natural finish. One that’s dewier gives a youthful appearance as it's more reflective.

3. Cover up with concealer

Use a concealer on any areas you want more cover up. Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser and Laura Mercier secret camouflage are top products.

Be careful when selecting a foundation colour, top tip is to test foundations on your chest area with at least three shades. The one that disappears is the correct colour.

4. Use illuminating powder

To add a youthful glow to skin avoid shimmers - these just highlight fine lines. Use more of an illuminating powder. DFMA star dust is fantastic as it has pink undertones and is great above the cheekbone and on the inner corner of the eyes to highlight and add radiance to the skin.

This will stop lip colour bleeding out. It will smooth out fine lines and hold the lipstick for longer.

6. Change lipstick colours often

Wearing your favourite shade from the Sixties will just give your age away. And even though it suited you it doesn't mean it still will.

Hair colour and clothes change over the years so try and get a shade suggested from someone who's experience from a make-up counter. This can take years of you and give a more modern approach to your make-up.

7. Keep your eyebrows soft

Make sure you still add eyebrows softly as this will enhance your face shape and give you an instant face lift. Pick an eyebrow palette as you can mix the shades. Eyebrows frame the face so don’t forget about them.
